World Theatre Festival

Brisbane Powerhouse

World Theatre Festival, now in its fifth year, brings the best in contemporary theatre to Brisbane from around the globe.

Taking place at various venues across the Powerhouse, eleven eclectic and entertaining works from Australia, Ireland, England, Scotland, Korea, Indonesia and USA will surprise, shock and delight attendees.

Highlights include premier performances, workshops and live music.

She Will Walk the Sky

Local playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer (The Tragical Life of Cheeseboy) and contemporary circus performer Chelsea McGuffin (Cantina, Circa) have teamed together in this special commission inspired by the Brisbane Powerhouse.  Don’t miss the world premier of this amazing aerial performance.

Solpadeine is My Boyfriend

Actress in Solpadeine is my Boyfriend performed at the World Theatre Festival Brisbane Powerhouse 2014

Told completely in rhyme, Solpadeine is My Boyfriend is an Irish black comedy.  A hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this dark and funny journey follows story-teller Stefanie Preissner through tumultuous relationships, painkiller addictions and the unending parade of her compatriots emigrating from Ireland.

Wedhus Gembel

Wedhus Gembel at Brisbane's World Theatre Festival 2014

Wedhus Gembel is for kids big and small.  Held at dusk in the Powerhouse plaza, join Melbourne’s Snuff Puppets and independent Indonesian performers as they re-tell an Indonesian fable about the cycle of life and power of nature using giant puppets.

If you would like to perform with the creators, Snuff Puppets is running a special two day workshop (Feb 15-16) that involves working with six Indonesian performance artists and Snuff Puppets. The results will be performed during the festival (Feb 18-22).

After selling out at Brisbane Festival in 2012, Underground is back with its pop-up Korean speakeasy.  Drink the night away with the bar’s eccentric proprietor and his ragtag crew of musicians. Post-show, Underground‘s bar stays open, with performances by special friends.

Mario, Queen of the Circus

Queen’s biggest fan, Mario, is back.  Created by New York-schooled circus star  Clarke McFarlane (La Soiree), this ‘one-man show’ features the hilariously charming Mario as MC, alongside routines from some of the best local and international female talent.  Expect aerial circus, comedy and Queen.
