The Rendez-vous Tea Room

The Rendezvous Tearoom in Woolloongabba is a last vestige of the quaint 1940s tea rooms that once were the highlights of a shopping trip to Brisbane city.

Located in long-demolished or renovated arcades, these tea rooms were the place where ladies in gloves and hats supped tea at linen clothed tables, nibbled on scones and dainty sandwiches or indulged in a high tea and had their tea leaves read before taking the tram home.

Since Doris, the last of the ladies who ran one of these tea rooms closed her doors in the Rowes Arcade her legacy is carried on by Rendez-vous’s owner, who has re-created the 1940s from the menu and décor right down to the old crooners that sing in the background.

Crockery is fine china, each of the tables has an artificial rose and on the food front, this is the cheapest and most old-fashioned café fare in town by a long shot.

Customers can choose between fresh or toasted sandwiches with curried egg & lettuce, chicken & mayo or ham, cheese and tomato, Devonshire tea or pikelets, jam and cream with tea, cake and coffee or lash out with a quiche and salad.

Or do the elderly aunt on pension day and indulge in something not seen on the menu for decades: the mixed plate of 2 triangle sandwiches and half scone or pikelet.

Rendez-vous also does toast (raisin or cinnamon) for $3.50 and at the other end of the scale a fine 'low tea' (for 2) or a high tea with all the trimmings: sandwiches, quiches, scones, pikelets and petit fours, tea of coffee.

And no trip to Rendez-vous is complete without a tea leaf reading at a corner leadlight lamp-lit table or in one of the gold-curtained booths at the rear.

Need to know: *High teas require prior notice and a reservation.

Nice to know: This is more than a tea room but a place to switch off the electronics and take time out from the fast lane. It’s also a fantastic place to take a mum or grandma or meet the girlfriends for lunch.
