Paddington Tram Fire Commemoration

To commemorate the Paddington Tram Depot fire of 1962, when a third of Brisbane's tram fleet was destroyed, the Brisbane Tramway Museum is holding a special event on September 24.

Located where the Paddo Central complex is now, the Paddington Tram Depot was a major storage and overnight parking spot for Brisbane's trams, with the substation across the road generating the electricity to run them. The depot was never rebuilt and the 65 trams that were lost that night never replaced. Throughout the 1960's Brisbane transitioned to becoming more of a car city, until 1969, the end of the tram era.

The historic outdoor museum is home to a range of vintage trams dating from the 1800s to 1969, the last year that trams trundled through the streets of Brisbane. 

And for this occasion, you can take unlimited rides on 7 of them (driven by drivers in traditional uniforms), as well as take a ride on vintage BCC buses and watch the special Tram Pulling competition.

A sausage sizzle, coffee wagon and ice-creams will be available onsite and there'll also a Brisbane Metro and Police display.
