Lifeline Bookfest

South Brisbane

The mammoth bi-annual  Lifeline Bookfest sees bibliophiles and bargain hunters descend on the Convention Centre bearing suitcases, shopping trolleys and supermarket bags which they fill to the brim with pre-loved books on every subject ever invented.

For here, at Queensland's biggest secondhand book sale are 22 semi-trailers worth of books spread across 4.5km of tables.

Whether or not they go on to read them all is another matter but who cares if the history of the Mephisto war tank or horny backed toad costs two dollars? Besides which they can always be donated to a good cause like next year's fair.

But it's not all obscurity – get here early, dig deep and search long and it's possible to unearth out-of-print gems nobody thought were still in existence. They even have the likes of rare and retro sheet music.

And no matter what the interest there's a genre to match here. It's a particularly good source of children's books both contemporary and classic and being a biannual event provides the perfect opportunity to keep children's libraries updated for a steal.

Opening hours - Jan 18 - 7.30am-6pm; Jan 19-23 - 8.30am-6pm; Jan 24 8.30am-9pm; Jan 25-27 8.30am-6pm.

Need to know - In respect for the environment, as of this event, the organisers will no longer have plastic bags onhand for purchases so make sure you BYO your own. They will have re-usable Bookfest Enviro Bags available for purchase for $1 each.
