Jon Molvig: Maverick

QAG

Jon Molvig: Maverick, showing at QAG from September 14 to February 2, 2020, shines a light on the work of an acclaimed Australian artist and teacher, and his immense impact on Brisbane’s cultural landscape.

A dominant force in Brisbane’s late-1960s art scene, Jon Molvig used the river city as the catalyst for his major work and his expressionist view of the world. The Archibald Prize-winning Molvig was also a charismatic teacher whose unwavering commitment to painting inspired many a young artist.

Described as outspoken, rebellious and fiercely independent, Molvig’s work focuses on everything from unique landscapes to the human form. In fact, some of his most memorable works depict madams and mad men, and lovers and nudes.

As well as acknowledging Molvig’s contribution to the local art community, this fascinating exhibition features his early, vibrant European-influenced works, while also showcasing his stylistic eclecticism.
