Indimex Cafe Bar Restaurant

Stones Corner

Indimex Cafe Bar Restaurant is a quirky colourful addition to the Stones Corner shopping strip, serving up an unlikely but delicious combo of Indian and Mexican food with a twist.

Affable owner and chef GJ hails from India where he has worked as a chef and recently spent some years as head chef in a Mexican restaurant in Japan, hence his firm handle on and knowledge of the two cuisines.

With Indimex he has created a bright funky boho space, with indoor and outdoor seating and wall art that is an ode to world peace, love and justice and food that is an ode to India and Mexico.

Here diners can tuck into their meals of curries, enchiladas and Mexican beers in booths overlooked by The Beatles, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Bob Marley. Inspirational women have their own section, with Frida Mayo and a reproduced still silhouette of the heroine of 1950s Oscar-nominated film Mother India.

The extensive menu at Indimex covers two countries and at times fuses them in surprising fashion. On the Mexican front there are dips like Holy Guacamole and 3 Amigos, along with enchiladas, quesadillas, nachos, burritos and tacos (served with biryani rice, guacamole, black lentils and sour cream)  and for Indian fans, kebabs or signature curries , ranging from mild – Makhani and korma to medium – Sanjwala and Rogan Josh – to hot – Madras and Vindaloo.

But embrace the real Indimex philosophy and there’s a wealth of dishes like Bombay Oysters Kilpatrick, Bombay Pizza made on naan, great Indian Ocean Soup and Tostada Seafood (crispy tortilla shell filled with prawns, squid, mussels, scallops and baby octopus, on mesculin salad with guacamole and sour cream.

Or try the recommended Chimosas (samosa blended with chimmi-churri and served with sweet chili dipping sauce) or sizzling fajitas or roast tandoori chicken with bacon, cheese, chilli and oregano naan.

Desserts span continents too, with classic offerings ranging from Arroz Con Leche (Mexican rice pudding) to Gulab Jamur (a classic Indian sweet).

Indimex is also open daily for breakfast like you’ve never had – think Indimex Brekkie of potato bhaji with scrambled eggs or Mex Masala omelette with parathas (Indian grilled flat bread) or Bombay Benedict Brekkie – eggs with curried hollandaise sauce, daal and chicken tikka slices or corn bread with butter/maple syrup.

This is also your local family friendly restaurant sure to be a hit with kids, with special great value children’s menus for breakfast, lunch or dinner that range from Indimex to standard Oz.

On the drinks list are international and local beers, wines, spirits and cocktails like margaritas (by the glass or jug), Pina Colada, Long Island Iced Tea and Sangria by the glass or jug.

Otherwise Coffee is Dancing Bean, teas come loose leaf served in gorgeous teapots and cups and there’s chai latte or chai masala.

Need to know: Portions at Indimex are super generous.
