Hangman's Walk

South Brisbane Cemetery

Take the Hangman’s Walk night tour of the Old South Brisbane Cemetery for a fascinating insight into the notorious historical figures buried there.

Led by capital punishment historian Christopher Dawson, the tour will take visitors to the graves of those who were executed during Brisbane’s dark past, as well as the tomb of the hangman himself. Amongst the infamous prisoners to be hung on the gallows across the road at Boggo Road Gaol were bushranger Patrick Kenniff and child-killer Ernest Austin, who was the last man to be executed in Queensland.

Along the way visitors will learn about how the hangings were carried out and how they changed over time and the death process suffered by the hanged as well as untold tales from the hangman.

Other intriguing facts include who was allowed and forbidden to watch the executions, the locations that the hangings took place and how Queensland was the first to abolish capital punishment in the British Empire.

Need to know - Due to COVID-19 regulations tour numbers are limited to 15.
