Deep Oceans

Queensland Museum

Deep Oceans takes visitors to Qld Museum on a rare journey to the cold dark mysterious world that lurks at the farthest depths of the ocean.

Deep Oceans Queensland Museum

Only three humans have ever travelled to these unexplored parts, and as such more is known about the surface of Mars than what lies beneath here.

Stories and legends of mythical monsters of the deep abound, along with real-life creatures, all of which are showcased in this exhibition.

Highlights of Deep Oceans, which is family friendly and suited for all ages, include:

Deep Oceans Queensland Museum

1. Meeting some of the real-life creatures that are behind some of the myths and legends of the underwater world of the sea.

2. The chance to step inside a real life bathysphere (submersible chamber that travels to the bottom of the ocean) as well as hear real-life audio recordings of dives into the deep.

3. Check out a real life specimen of a giant squid from the museum’s collection.

4. Experiment with interactive hands-on activities like seeing how colour appears at various depths and testing the effect of water pressure on the arm.

In addition children aged 5 and under can follow the special Octonauts Trail, picking up clues and learning as they go.
