There are neighbourhood festivals and then there is the Bulimba Festival. Set to rock Oxford St and surrounds this Sunday and now in its third year, it has risen out of the ashes of the old Bulimba Carnivale by the RSL to become the go-to event on the community calendar.
This year the Westpac Stage will be firing up with entertainment starting with the Royal Australian Navy Band at 10.30 and ending with Joe Camilleri & Co at 2, with SAVVY in the middle. Meanwhile at the Style Fashion Stage Luka Powell and The Sound Collective mix it up with the New Farm Community Choir, Balmoral State High School Dance Troupe and Concert Band.
Market stalls featuring wares and fare from a host of local businesses will be there for the browsing - fashion, accessories, trinkets, handmade gifts etc. And an exhaustive array of delicious sweet treats such as fairy floss, cupcakes, Poffertjes, snow cones, licorice and gelato and savoury such as German hotdogs, yakitori, sushi, sate, dumplings, potato swirls and nuts will be there for the munching.
For the children there’s plenty to keep them happily occupied, with a Kids Corner in Bulimba Memorial Park featuring carnival rides as well as a rock climbing wall, animal farm, giant slide, hurricane, dodgem cars and jumping castle.
And for parents of young children surviving the day is made easier by The Chill Out Zone at the Uniting Church, with a drop-in for a cuppa, kids DVDs and change facilities.
