Bleach* The Gold Coast Festival

2019

Bleach* is the quintessential Gold Coast festival, bringing its lively arts and outdoor culture together for 12 days of beach concerts, dance, theatre, circus, art installations and more.

Locals and visitors alike are invited to celebrate as Bleach* turns on the Gold Coast for 12 days of incredible arts and cultural experiences, with 28 unique productions and 132 performances including 4 world premieres and 3 Queensland premieres.

The jam-packed program of events will take place across the Gold Coast including iconic beaches, waterways, parklands and civic spaces, featuring free live music, award-winning dance, a thought-provoking political swimming carnival, thrilling drive-in with a difference, and the festival's centrepiece event, Verdi’s Requiem on Saturday, April 27.

Bleach Festival, Gold Coast, Verdi's Requiem

Verdi's Requiem is a large-scale opera performed under the stars, presented by Bleach* and Griffith University in partnership with HOTA, Home of the Arts, and Opera Queensland. This once-in-a-lifetime musical event, directed by Opera Queensland's Artistic Director Patrick Nolan, will feature almost 100 musicians and more than 60 singers.

“Requiem has soaring voices, the might and force of Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, a spectacular outdoor stage and a few other visual treats to generate no end of goose bump moments” promises Bleach* Artistic Director and CEO Louise Bezzina.

Tickets are on sale now. General Admission tickets for a family of four are offered at a discounted rate.

Bleach Festival, Gold Coast, Throttle

Another festival highlight is Throttle, a newly commissioned work by Helpmann Award-winning, Gold Coast-based dance theatre company, The Farm.  Billed as a “drive-in live-action movie with a difference”, Throttle is a B-grade thriller performed in front of an audience safely ensconced in their cars. This intimate performance combines elements of stunt and the thrill of surprise with an eerie stage lit by car headlights and incredible sound that comes through your car speakers.

Bleach Festival, Gold Coast, Watersongs

Making its debut at Bleach* in 2019 is Water Songs, a musical concert series that will see travelling minstrels perform original compositions and classic covers from the waterfront into backyards and public parks along the Gold Coast’s network of canals, creeks and channels.

Bleach Festival, Gold Coast, Tectonic

Tectonic by Townsville's award-winning Dancenorth is a free 15-minute performance installation staged twice a night from April 17 to 21 on stunning Burleigh Beach. This highly physical contemporary dance spectacle and interactive installation is inspired by the plight of Torres Strait communities whose island homes will be consumed by rising sea levels.

Bleach Festival, Gold Coast, My Urrwai

Two acclaimed female-led works making their Queensland premiere at Bleach* are My Urrwai and Landing. My Urrwai is Ghenoa Gela’s funny and moving one-woman show recounting her journey as a gay woman from the Torres Strait raised in a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Bleach Festival, Gold Coast, Landing

Landing by Perth artist Tanya Lee is a response to Australia’s detention policies and fractious relationship with Manus Island. Presented as an absurd swimming carnival, Landing is conducted over 24 hours in the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre with participants trying to swim the distance from Australia to Manus Island in a continuous relay, guided by people from the local migrant and refugee communities.

Bleach Festival, Gold Coast, Terror Australis

Terror Australis, by Brisbane psycho-siren Leah Shelton, will make its Gold Coast debut at HOTA with 3 shows only. This must-see solo cabaret is rampant with black humour, anti-burlesque, live art and Hills-Hoist pole-dancing.

Bleach Festival, Gold Coast, Burleigh Beach

The Bleach* at Burleigh entertainment precinct is back with an action-packed program of free live music, contemporary dance, children’s workshops, plus The Bleach* Club's pop-up bar on the beach. This dedicated festival hub will host free entertainment across the 12 days including a concert headlined by ARIA award-winning songstress Montaigne, the ever-popular Pub Choir, and performances by Mama Kin Spender and Kira Puru.

“Bleach* is renowned for its surprises and for pushing the boundaries – 2019 will be no different.’’ - Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.
