Around The World In 80 Days

Gardens Theatre Qut

Richard Branson with his hot-air balloon has got nothing on Phileas Fogg in Jules Verne’s classic adventure, Around the World in 80 Days, in a fun-filled production at QUT Gardens Theatre, July 24 and 25.

This version of the enduring tale celebrates the type of extreme endeavour and folly that the mega-rich engage in. Think of Branson’s escapades and Cirque du Soleil billionaire Guy Laliberté with his Russian space rocket. If you’ve got the squillions to squander, why not?

The familiar story sees millionaire adventurer Phileas Fogg agreeing to a non-stop sprint circling the globe in just 80 days – an outrageous wager that puts both his fortune and his life at risk. He’s accompanied by French valet, Passepartout, but their journey is marred by the appearance of a Scotland Yard detective on the trail of a bank robber matching Fogg’s description. The pair encounters elephants, hurricanes, Native American warriors and many more obstacles that threaten to derail the journey.

Amazingly, 39 characters are portrayed by just three actors, and the production has the critics raving. The Arts Review said of the hijinks, “This production is a delightful and somewhat silly romp…” while Theatre People said, “It was a pleasure watching this group milk every comic moment.”

The novel has been adapted for the stage by Toby Hulse, is directed by Terence O’Connell, and presented by Ellis Productions in association with HIT Productions as part of a national tour.

This production suitable for all ages promises to be a lot of fun and a tour de force performance from the three performers.
