Swing
Brisbane Powerhouse
Audiences who like a bit of swing dancing thrown in with their romantic comedy won’t want to miss Swing, the award-winning theatre show from Dublin when it comes to Brisbane in May.
Winner of Bewley’s Little Gem Award at the Dublin Fringe Festival and fresh from successful seasons in New York, Paris, Edinburgh and the rest of the UK, Swing features 1950s rock and roll tunes and a heartwarming romantic tale. It tells the story of Joe and May, who meet at swing dancing classes and fumble their way not only through their dance steps but a relationship.
The production is being presented by the Powerhouse in association with Merrigong Theatre Company, performed by Fishamble: The New Play Company – a multi-award winning and highly acclaimed Irish theatre company. Says Fishamble’s Artistic Director, Jim Culleton, “We’ve found that audiences in Australia have a similar sense of humour to the Irish… We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring Swing to Australian audiences.”
Performers in Swing are Arthur Riordan and Gene Rooney, who play 20 characters. Between them they have a host of stage, film and TV credits to their names.
Swing was the Critics’ Pick in the New York Times, who said that it was, “… winning, charming… you want to join them on the floor”, while Irish Theatre Magazine described it as “funny, warm and well produced, with a rousing finale that’s enough to make you kick up your own heels.”
