Stones In His Pockets

Qut Gardens Theatre

Equal parts deeply moving and delicious funny, Stones in His Pockets is the first of six professional Australian productions as part of QUT Gardens Theatre’s 2017 series.

The play, written by Marie Jones and directed by Chris Bendall, has actors Grant Cartwright and Sean Hawkins playing 15 characters between them in the story taking place in a small Irish town that’s been invaded by a film shoot. The film’s plot has a rich girl and a local farmer having a romance, while in the real world some of the townspeople who’ve been conscripted as lowly extras clash with the brash Hollywood types.

Stones in His Pockets

Director Bendall says that Stones in His Pockets focuses on the characters that usually don’t get much of a look in, i.e. a film extra. And as Ricky Gervais’s hilarious TV series, Extras, showed, it’s a job that’s ripe for the picking for both comedic and dramatic material.

Stones in His Pockets

The play is a Critical Stages production which is touring nationally and has the considerable talents of Sean Hawkins and Grant Cartwright on board. After graduating from the prestigious WAAPA in 2009, Hawkins’s career has gained traction with stints with Bell Shakespeare Theatre Company, and roles for various theatre companies. For TV, he’s been in Home and Away, and Cleverman.

Cartwright appeared with Craig McLachlan in the Australian sci-fi film, Restoration, and will soon star as Peter Allen in the TV series about Olivia Newton-John. You might’ve seen him in Love Child, Barracuda and several other TV and stage roles.
