Stewart Macfarlane - Coastline
Mitchell Fine Art
Coastline is a contemporary art exhibition from Australian figurative artist Stewart MacFarlane, illustrating his love of the coast at Mitchell Fine Art May 2 – 26.
An artist whose work is saturated with contrasting blocks of colour and exaggerated angles, MacFarlane speaks of his connection to the coast, saying that he is drawn mostly to the ocean: “I like to live in sight of it. I am not nautically gifted, I don’t surf, sail, fish, or swim much. I just love the look, the expanse and the possibilities of the ocean.”
The brightly coloured works in Coastline are dramatic narratives, which can sometimes be uncertain and unsettling. The artist weaves in visual clues that invite the viewer to think of questions rather than answers as he entices us to play detective and solve the mystery. He likes the viewer to do some work in deciding what’s going on.
There are also glimpses of the outback in the exhibition, creating a stark contrast with its open-ended landscape, but which MacFarlane says, gives a similar feeling “of uninhibited mental freedom and a feast of possibilities.”
Need to know – Official Opening Night is on Friday, May 11, 6pm – 8pm. Stewart MacFarlane will be present at Opening Night and also for an Artist Talk, Saturday, May 12 from 2pm.
