South Pacific
Ipswich Civic Centre
Most people have heard the evergreen songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s popular musical, South Pacific – it’s hard not to sing along to the strains of I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair (or the alternative version that was a shampoo ad years ago!).
Now audiences of all ages have the chance to see the enduring musical at the Ipswich Civic Centre in four performances from Friday, 9 – Sunday, 11 October.
The Ipswich Orpheus Chorale are putting on the production – the latest in a long line of shows that have entertained Ipswich audiences for decades. They’re commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII, with the story taking place on an island paradise during the war.
A love story where romance is threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war, featuring mixed-race children and interracial romance, was certainly a controversial topic for a musical back in the day. It was originally adapted from the Pulitzer Prizewinning novel, Tales of the South, by James A. Michener.
Other songs guaranteed to induce humming or feet tapping include There is Nothin’ Like a Dame, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali Ha’i, and Happy Talk. They’ll be performed by talented local performers accompanied by a fantastic orchestra, and of course there’ll be lavish costumes and sets – you’d expect nothing less from the producers who brought Ipswich audiences shows such as Les Misérables, Spamalot! and Miss Saigon.
