Songs For The Fallen
Brisbane Powerhouse
Acclaimed cabaret musical Songs for the Fallen celebrates the life and times of Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis, the muse for works from Moulin Rouge and Camille to La Traviata.
A highlight of the mind-blowing Wonderland summer festival at the Brisbane Powerhouse, the part punk opera, part vaudeville, part MTV-mixed-with-Baroque show re-imagines Marie’s last birthday party in a way that is a far cry from the history books.
Rather than marking the occasion alone in her Paris apartment, in this show she celebrates in a way she would have loved: a party with beautiful men and lashings of champagne.
Performer and writer Sheridan Harbridge says the show proves the adage that ‘good women seldom make history’. ‘Marie was a courtesan, party girl, liar and legend, and we trace her journey from extreme poverty to the most notorious woman in France We also tell her story through original baroque-pop songs, composed by AFI nominee Basil Hogios.’
As Sheridan says, ‘For Wonderland, audiences will be able to party with Marie inside the theatre and then continue to party on outside under the stars.'
