Shirley Valentine
Qut Gardens Theatre
The original desperate housewife, Shirley Valentine, is coming to QUT Gardens Theatre in this funny and heart-warming one-woman play by the award-winning Willy Russell.
Starring effervescent Mandi Lodge (Always..Patsy Cline, Menopause the Musical) as the middle-aged working class Liverpool housewife whose life has stagnated, Shirley Valentine is directed by Denny Lawrence and presented by HIT Productions as part of a 2017 national tour.
On the wrong side of 40, with a stale marriage and battered self-esteem, Shirley wistfully yearns for something more. When her best friend wins an all-expenses-paid trip-of-a-lifetime to Greece, she realises this is the escape she’s been looking for. She packs her bags and heads for freedwom, leaving a note on the kitchen cupboard, “Gone to Greece. Back in two weeks!”.
Under the warmth of the Mediterranean sun and liberated from her identity as 'just a wife and mother', Shirley rediscovers her feisty former self, re-igniting a flame of happiness she long thought extinguished.
