Shakespeare On Screen
Goma Cinematheque
GOMA Cinematheque is commemorating the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death this year with a fantastic cinematic showcase of the bard’s timeless works on screen.
The free program, a collection of the most beloved, well-crafted and inventive films inspired by Shakespeare’s works, spans the long and varied history of screen adaptations, starting with the silent Merchant of Venice(1923), through to Macbeth (2015).
The classic tales have not been restricted by neither genre or setting, just the ingenuity of the film-maker, as shown with The Tempest in outer space (Forbidden Planet, 1956) and Othello played out in a London jazz club (All Night Long, 1962).
Need to know - The program kicks off on Friday Apr 22 at 6pm with a screening in Cinema A of Baz Luhrmann's 1996 hit Romeo and Juliet. On Saturday Apr 23rd at 1pm, there's a lively forum discussion in GOMA Cinema A on the long-lasting legacy of Shakespeare's works and how, after 40 years, he has managed to stay relevant for a contemporary audience.
