Red Sky Morning

Paddington Substation

Take the chance to watch a stunning Australian play in a fresh new theatre space, when Room to Play Independent Theatre present Red Sky Morning by Tom Holloway at the Paddington Substation, Home to Hands on Art.

Named Play of the Year by the Sunday Age when it was first produced by Red Stitch in Melbourne,  it’s described as a “harrowing relatable drama” about a regional Australian husband and wife who crave to connect amidst the daily routine of family life. The audience is privy to the couple’s passionate private thoughts and unspoken desires as they go about their lives, while their teenage daughter also has romantic thoughts of her own as she fantasises about her first love.

Brisbane audiences can see the play at an exciting industrial space in the old 1930s Paddington Substation, now called Room to Play Independent Theatre. One of Brisbane’s few remaining interwar tramway substations, the building has been transformed into a fully equipped, intimate theatre.

It’s a great space to see talented local actors Joss McWilliam, who most recently starred in Queensland Theatre’s St Mary’s in Exile, and Matilda Award-winning Elise Greig (Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls, Secret Bridemaids’ Business). Joining them in her debut with Room to Play Productions is Madison Kennedy-Tucker, a recent performer at Melbourne Fringe in Player 2 and in Short and Sweet Festival.

Directing Red Sky Morning is founder of Room to Play Productions and the Brisbane Youth Theatre Company, Heidi Manche.

She says of the work: “Red Sky Morning is a play where the desire to be heard amidst the cacophony of noise inside and outside our heads runs deep. The intimacy of the venue provides the perfect setting to share this Australian story.”
