Quartet
Ipswich Civic Centre
Lovers of quality theatre in Ipswich are in for a treat when Ronald Harwood’s play, Quartet, by the Queensland Theatre Company comes to town for the evening.
A beloved play by the respected playwright, who’s also penned Another Time, The Dresser and Interpreters, Quartet debuted in 1999. It was adapted into a film a few years back starring luminaries such as Maggie Smith and Billy Connolly and was directed by Dustin Hoffman.
Andrew Moor directs this production, and taking on the central four roles are Andrew McFarlane, Christine Amor, Kate Wilson and Trevor Stuart, who have a litany of amazing theatre, TV and film credits and awards too numerous to mention amongst them.
The play is described as ‘devilishly funny’ with its take on retirement and the fears and frustrations of getting old. It’s funny, touching and moving with its story about retired opera singers, Reggie, Cecily and Wilfred going to live in a retirement home in country Kent in England. All seems well until the appearance of Reggie’s ex-wife, Jean, causes deep-seated emotions to burst forth in the lead-up to the annual concert celebrating composer, Verdi’s birthday.
People are still raving about QTC’s world premiere of Ladies in Black late last year. Quartet is already ringing in 2016 with another acclaimed success.
Need to know - The production is touring Queensland with shows in Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Cairns, Townsville and more. Check the website for more details.
