Piers Bateman & Todd Whisson
Red Hill Gallery
Red Hill Gallery is hosting two must-see art exhibitions, with a Retrospective Exhibition of the late Piers Bateman plus Whisson’s Limitless.
Piers Bateman is renowned for his passionate love of the Australian landscape, with many of his paintings capturing the harsh beauty of his homeland. The Retrospective includes several vivid works of remote landscapes from his numerous trans-Australian painting expeditions.
Featuring in over 60 major solo exhibitions, both here and overseas, Bateman’s artwork adorns the walls of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Melbourne University, the conference room in the Australian Embassy in Washington, and many more.
Bateman also loved to sail and paint in places like the Greek Island and the Mediterranean, but tragically one of his boating trips resulted in his death after an accident in 2015 off the coast of New South Wales. Says Red Hill Gallery Director, Margaret Campbell-Ryder, of the artist’s prodigious talents, “Many artists try to replicate our Aussie bush and sea scapes on canvas, but few achieved the delicate balance that Piers was able to deliver, time and time again.”
In Todd Whisson’s exhibition, Limitless, the Brisbane artist – the son of esteemed artist, Eric Whisson – pushes the ‘limitless’ boundaries, with this latest collection positioning him “from realist art to conceptual art in order to examine expressive values”.
Whisson adds, “… I have been particularly focused on painting from life hypnotic objects sporadically captured in a fleeting moment of time.”
His recent works with a more abstract approach allow his traditional techniques and skills to shine through while also enabling him to communicate more than a visual representation. In his Australian landscapes, Whisson skilfully portrays light and shadows, applying ‘en plein air’ style of painting – a phrase developed by the French Impressionists meaning ‘in open air’.
