Operaq's Sensory
At Goma
Opera Queensland (OperaQ) kicks off its dynamic 2017 season with Sensory, a series of stunning and surprising live opera performances throughout the iconic gallery spaces of GOMA, accompanied by a gourmet food and wine experience.
Part of the GOMA Turns 10 celebrations, Sensory is an immersive event where guests will be invited to move through the gallery spaces in order to soak up the sensual atmosphere of the combined visual and musical splendours in each room. The program has been carefully curated to blend effortlessly with GOMA’s immersive works.
There will be plenty of time at the halfway point for guests to indulge in the fine wines and superb canapés on offer and to share their experiences before they embark on part two of the evening. And with multiple pathways through Sensory, guests will experience surprises around each corner.
OperaQ Artistic Director Lindy Hume describes the Sensory experience as “a dream landscape”.
“There’s no sense of any linear narrative or logical sequence of events, but as in a dream, everything one encounters is somehow familiar, with a deep and intangible undertow,” Ms Hume said.
The exciting group of performers will include acclaimed violinist Brendan Joyce and Brisbane favourite, soprano Sarah Crane. Musical highlights will include Strauss’ haunting ‘Die Nacht’ performed by Sarah, with Brisbane award-winning pianist Alex Raineri accompanying; and Brendan’s solo performances of the beautiful ‘Méditation’ from Massenet’s opera Thaïs. Exquisite dancers from Expressions Dance Company will complement the sublime musical moments of the evening, which will also feature other singers well known to Brisbane audiences.
“Whether it’s the moody Romanticism of Schubert Lieder, a lush moonsong, or the sparse elegance of a Monteverdi chorale, we want the music and performance to resonate psychologically with the magnificent artworks in each space,” said Ms. Hume.
In a nutshell – In their first creative adventure of 2017, OperaQ is once again taking opera into a new setting, offering an amplified cultural experience with an enchanting combination of music, art and dance.
