The Odd Couple
Playhouse Qpac
The Odd Couple, the classic comedy from Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony-award-winning playwright Neil Simon, is given the magical QTC treatment by artistic director Wesley Enoch in his last production for the company.
For his swansong Enoch* has recreated the hilarity and chaos of the 1968 film about two highly unlikely flatmates starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, whilst bringing it to new life in this must-see production.
The timeless story revolves around Felix Ungar, a neurotic new writer who is thrown out by his wife and moves in with his friend Oscar Madison, a slovenly sportswriter. Despite Oscar's problems – careless spending, excessive gambling, a poorly kept house filled with spoiled food – he seems to enjoy life. Felix, however, seems utterly incapable of enjoying anything and only finds purpose in pointing out his own and other people's mistakes and foibles.
Reuniting for the occasion are acting and directing powerhouse Jason Klarwein as the slovenly spots journalist Oscar and Tame Matheson as Felix. Klarwein and Matheson’s previous brilliant couplings have included Design for Living (set in 1930s Paris) and Macbeth (chillingly re-imagined by Michael Attenborough).
The rest of the stellar cast includes Tim Dashwood (Managing Carmen), Amy Ingram (The Seagull, I Want to Know What Love Is, Trollop), Lauren Jackson (Macbeth), Bryan Probets (Design for Living), Steven Rooke (Gasp, Kelly, Macbeth) and Colin Smith (Black Diggers).
*Wesley Enoch leaves QTC after 5 esteemed years as Artistic Director to become the new Festival Director of the Sydney.
