House Of Mirrors

House of Mirrors is a spell-binding labyrinth of seemingly endless mirrors, a mega walk-through installation that is a must do at this year's Brisbane Festival.

Since the 19th century, house of mirrors attractions had been trapping and reflecting participants, challenging those that venture into them, both physically and psychologically.

Australian installation artists Christian Wagstaff and Keith Courtney were commissioned to create House of Mirrors in partnership with their award-winning creative studio Creative Production Services for Dark Mofo 2016, one of Australia’s most subversive and unique festivals.

They used precise geometry and spatial design, as well as 40 tonnes of steel and 15 tonnes of mirrors, to create their modern, minimalist twist on the fairground classic. The installation focuses on the darker side of altered perception, playing with themes of uncertainty, claustrophobia, apprehension, uneasiness, thrill, panic and paranoia.

Featuring oblique corridors of large full-length mirrors, kaleidoscopic chambers, voids, doorways and darkened breaks, the House of Mirrors will appeal to kids and families, youth, art lovers, photographers and designers alike.

“These confronting puzzles have a long history of creating a sense of intrigue and disorientation, trickery and confusion. There are no special effects or tricks, it’s just mirrors and geometry,” says Christian Wagstaff.
