The Founding Years 1895-1915
Qag
With 2015 marking 120 years since the founding of the QAG, the fascinating exhibition The Founding Years 1895-1915 is a collection of works acquired during the first 20 years of the gallery’s existence.
As well as offering an intriguing insight into those who defined the earliest Queensland collections, the exhibition also offers a glimpse into the years of rapid social change prior to World War 1 and the fledgling development of a local and national identity.
Some of the gallery’s most loved and iconic artworks are on show in The Founding Years, (which is a must see for locals and visitors alike), including the first Australian acquisition, purchased in 1898 – Josephine Muntz-Adam’s Care (1893), R. Godfrey Rivers Under the Jacaranda (1903), and Blandford Fletcher’s Evicted (1887) that was purchased in 1896, and Brisbane artist Vida Lahey’s famous Monday Morning (1912).
