East West Street: A Song Of Good & Evil

Queensland Conservatorium

A unique and powerful music / theatre experience awaits with East West Street: A Song of Good and Evil, presented at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University on Saturday, February 24.

Inspired by human rights lawyer Philippe Sands’ prize-winning book, “East West Street”, this extraordinary performance event is directed by one of the UK’s leading opera directors Nina Brazier and featuring award-winning German actor Katja Riemann as co-narrator with Philippe Sands and accompanied by leading bass-baritone, Laurent Naouri, and renowned jazz pianist, Guillaume de Chassy.

East West Street: A Song of Good and Evil

Exploring the topic of the origins of genocide and crimes against humanity, it focuses on the amazing, connected stories of Sands’s grandfather and three people in the Nuremberg Trials – Cambridge academic Hersch Lauterpacht, Polish prosecutor Raphael Lemkin, and Hitler’s lawyer, Hans Frank.

East West Street: A Song of Good and Evil

The performance is based on the words, images and music that connected the two men - prosecutor and defendant, with composers such as Bach and Beethoven, to Ravel, Rachmaninov and Leonard Cohen interwoven into the performance. All of the characters had a passion for music, illustrating a deeper human connection but also conflict beyond that of their individual actions.

There’s been no shortage of superlatives to describe this performance: “brilliant” (The BBC), “compelling" (The Observer) and “amazing” (Financial Times). Don't miss this opportunity to experience this extraordinarily  memorable and compelling night in the theatre.
