Disgraced
Playhouse Qpac
Theatre lovers are in for a thought-provoking treat when Queensland Theatre presents the Melbourne Theatre Company production of Disgraced at the Playhouse, QPAC, 14 October – 6 November.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by Ayad Akhtar has been directed by Nadia Tass and features MTC’s much-lauded cast including Mitchell Butel, Kane Felsinger, Zindzi Okenyo and Hazem Shammas. This special Queensland Theatre season also has local Matilda Award-winning Libby Munro (Venus in Fur, Grounded).
The topical subject matter of Disgraced is about a man named Amir who’s on track to make partner in his law firm. Living a comfortable life in an Upper East Side apartment in New York, he and his wife throw a dinner party where the conversation ends up turning to race, religion and identity. From there, things fall apart and themes are explored of freedom of speech, political correctness, anti-Islamic prejudice, and politics in general.
This gripping and intense play has received rave reviews both overseas and in Australia, with The Washington Post saying, “Disgraced is just what a serious theatregoer craves these days: a tough-minded inquiry that finds urgent dramatic connections in things that divide us.”
Nice to know: There will be a Play Briefing on Tuesday, 11 October; a Night with the Artists on Thursday, 3 November; and Audio Described performances on Saturday, 29 October and Thursday, 3 November.
