David Lynch: Between Two Worlds

David Lynch: Between Two Worlds is a fascinating multi-media exhibition delving into the brilliant creative mind of one of the 20th century’s great artists, film-makers and musicians. Exclusive to GOMA, It is also the first David Lynch exhibition ever to come to Australian shores.

Renowned for his timeless cult movies, videos and TV shows that pushed the boundaries of film-making to explore the unconscious and the underbelly of human existence, David Lynch is also an acclaimed visual artist of 50 years standing. His prolific artworks include paintings, drawings, printmaking and photography, a selection of which form part of this exhibition on which he closely collaborated with QAGOMA.

Thanks to a mother who wouldn’t buy him colouring books, David relied on his own imagination rather than that of others right from the time he began drawing at the age of 5 (and hasn’t stopped since). Fascinated with machines and industry from a young age, the inspiration behind much of his early works – film, art and music – came from the city of Philadelphia, its factories and suburban houses during one of its darkest periods in the late 1960s. At a time when the city was crippled with corruption, crime, pollution and greed David found a profound and eerie beauty in its landscape and it is this kind of dark and haunting beauty that permeates the works in his exhibition.

With more than 200 works featured, the exhibition is divided into three ideas – ‘Man and Machine’, ‘The Extra-Ordinary’, and ‘Psychic Aches’, oscillating between the porous divide of the body and the greater world it inhabits. Themes explored along the way include inner conflict, subjects of industry and organic phenomena and the chance to find deeper meaning in the everyday experience.

Entrance to the exhibition is through ‘The Little Room’, a life size replication from his displayed painting of the same name. Once inside look out for the video of David Lynch at work, take time out behind the red curtain into the red Lynch lounge to view ‘In Dreams’ from Blue Velvet, ‘Love Me’ from Wild at Heart and ‘Llorendo’ from Mulholland Drive and be sure to plug in to the Eraserhead audio, in which Lynch has captured the evocative sounds that, as in everyday life, fill the ‘silence’ when characters aren’t talking.
