David Hayes: Trajectory

Mitchell Fine Art

The thought-provoking artworks of Brisbane-based artist David Hayes are on show in his first solo exhibition, Trajectory, at Mitchell Fine Art, from October 25 – November 18.

Trajectory, in which seemingly incongruous elements are blended – for example a bullet emanating from the centre of a flower with the title Full Petal Jacket – shows Hayes using metaphors to explore ‘the human condition and the many barriers we erect to deflect and hide our self-perceiving failings’.

It’s a series of vibrant still life assemblages that ask to be deciphered, with their masculine and feminine elements creating a tension. “In this body of work I have a continuing fascination with human vulnerability,” says the artist. “We develop layers upon layers of external barriers, defence mechanisms… to protect our frailties and our vulnerabilities. Yet it is possibly these hidden qualities that are our most beautiful.”

Hayes works in acrylic and resin, with stylistic influences rooted in pop culture. He’s interested in exploring the changing roles and identities of young men and women, relating to elements such as aggression, conflict, struggle and vulnerability. He’s inspired by traditional pop art icons Warhol, Lichtenstein and Ramos, but continues to evolve the style with influences of current artists such as Kehinde Wiley, Richard Philips and Jeff Koons.

Opening Night, with David Hayes in attendance, is on Friday, November 3, 6pm – 9pm.

There will be an Artist Talk on Saturday, November 4, 2pm.
