Cirque Africa
La Boite
Brace yourself for a jaw-dropping explosion of energy when Cirque Africa hits Brisbane, October 24 - November 4 at the Roundhouse Theatre, La Boite.
Acclaimed as the greatest performance experience from Africa and described as "The Lion King on steroids", the show is a kaleidoscopic celebration of culture, colour, music, mind-blowing talent and fun.
Cirque Africa has 22 stars from six African countries - acrobats and dancers who'll dazzle with their strength, flexibility and high-level energy. The visual spectacle is accompanied by a live performance of custom-composed original, heartbeat-driven rhythms of African music.
Director Papa Africa, aka Winston Ruddle, draws many cast members from the ranks of the Hakuna Matata Acrobats, established in Tanzania in 2003 for trouble-making teens on the streets. Teens now spend a minimum of two years training there before becoming part of Cirque Africa or being head-hunted around the world.
Circus Master Ruddle wanted to portray a positive image of Africa to audiences and change perceptions of what people think about the continent. Fresh, funky, coolly urban, yet infused with centuries of history, Cirque Africa is, as Ruddle describes it, "the perfect circus for our times."
