The Button Event

Theatregoers are spoilt with the Queensland Theatre Company’s world-premiere of The Button Event two-week run at the Bille Brown Studio.
An inspirational true story devised by multi Greenroom Award-winning artist, Todd MacDonald and director Bagryana Popov, it’s about a man’s struggle after one of his twin daughters is diagnosed with a terrible disease – Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.
The play explores the chaos and devastation on a family when confronted with the merry-go-round of medical procedures and potions, family counselling, and wrestling with spiritual beliefs: “In the time it takes to push a button, the future of his family hangs in the balance between beauty and fear, faith and science.”
Popov, who is interested in how artistic practice can speak about social and political reality in new and poetic forms, says that The Button Event is a deeply personal piece and adds, “Life is big. It’s about being human. It’s about rising up.”
MacDonald is the sole performer on stage in the creative work which “fuses physical performance, wry humour, raw emotion and a few hundred tennis balls”. For theatre he has directed Kelly and The Mountaintop, while his TV performances include The Secret Life Of Us, Blue Heelers and Neighbours.
