1984
Lyric Theatre Qpac
An absolute must-see theatre work is the critically acclaimed West End production of George Orwell’s 1984, at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC, has been so popular that a final has been added for this Sunday 18 June at 6pm after all other evening shows sold out!
The U.K. production is a collaboratively produced work from Headlong, Nottingham Playhouse and the Almeida Theatre, and since its premiere in 2013 has become a hugely successful work which critics can’t speak highly enough about. The Times (U.K.) called it ‘chilling’ and ‘ingenious’ and urged people to see the ‘stunning show’, while The Guardian (U.K.) similarly gave it a five-star review. It also wowed audiences at its sold-out season at the 2015 Melbourne Festival.
There have been numerous futuristic dystopian novels in recent years but it’s still amazing to think that back in 1948, Orwell predicted things that are now scarily accurate about populations being under constant surveillance by the government.
Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan have adapted the book and also co-direct, with this production featuring a new Australian cast, including Paul Blackwell, Tom Conroy, Terence Crawford, Ursula Mills, Renato Musolino, Guy O’Grady, Yalin Ozucelik and Fiona Press.
