Live! Qld Band Culture
Slq
Live! Queensland Band Culture is a fascinating expo that traces the soundtrack of Queenslander's lives from the early days of settlement (1860) through until today and the way it highlights the bands and music that helped shape our culture.
For the occasion the SLQ gallery has been transformed into a live music space, with Sunday sessions from midday showcasing music through the ages each week. And in the library itself, a jazz chill out room is a dance space, a 'rock' room is festooned with posters, T-shirts, memorabilia and a rock'n'roll music tree. Meantime 'Sounds of the Emergent State', a six screen video installation by artist Sarah-Mace Dennis, focusses on the changing state of music from influence of American soldiers in the war years through to the thriving punk culture in the 70s and the indei bands of the late 20th century.
Other highlights include music docos at the SLQ Auditorium, a tribute to the Deadly Brothers (Murri men who've made their mark on the Qld music scene), Tea and Music sessions and the Music Box, a multi-faceted pop-up venue in the Knowledge Walk that promises something different every day.
And that's a skerrick of the rich and varied programme that can be experienced at varied times throughout the showing of the expo. For full details and week to week events check with the SLQ programme.
