Fun Palace

State Library of Queensland

The State Library of Queensland will be transformed into a Fun Palace* on October 5, where the worlds of art and science collide.

For one day, everyone is an artist and everyone a scientist (the Fun Palace motto) at the State Library, which opens its doors to families and all ages to partake in science and art-related activities whilst learning a nifty thing or two.

Participants on the day will be called upon to save Brisbane from cardboard “kaiju” monsters via a collaborative board game experience, as well as making jewellery (to keep!) from recycled materials.

There’s also the opportunity to join a reading and writing party on the lawn, create an augmented-reality poster, or even bring back the 80s with a retro printed T-shirt (make sure you bring along a shirt from home to print).

The full line-up of activities includes cardboard kaiju, T-shirt printing, Minecraft world building, Ozobot miniature robot making, jewellery making, and 3D printing beads. While there’s plenty of fun to go around, places are limited for some activities, so make sure you get in early and sign up for these on the day.

Nice to know - *The notion of Fun Palaces was conceived in the 1960s by architect Cedric Price and Joan Littlewood as a 'laboratory of fun' or a university of the streets' that was a portable temporary home to the arts and sciences that was open to all. The idea didn't come to fruition until 2014 in the UK, when it captured the imagination of a nation and the Fun Palace was born. Since opening across the world in 2014, pop-up Fun Palaces* have been taking the world by storm, with 124000 participating globally in 292 events by 2016.
