Curious Affection Film Program

Goma Cinema

Held in conjunction with the striking major exhibition by Patricia Piccinini, the Curious Affection Film Program offers must-see films at GOMA Cinema A until May 30.

Anyone who’s seen the astonishing exhibition of Patricia Piccinini’s part-human, part-animal creations will enjoy getting along to see some of these films which are hand-picked by the Australian artist in response to her longstanding interests in science, storytelling and empathy. They encompass a range of sci-fi and horror classics, as well as beloved animations and documentaries.

Curious Affection Film Program GOMA

If you missed the cinema run of The Shape of Water, which took out the Academy Award for Best Picture recently, you can catch up with it on Sunday, April 15 at 3pm. And why not see the original ‘sea monster with a heart of gold’ horror flick that inspired it, with the classic 1954 film, Creature From the Black Lagoon, on the same day at 1pm?

Another classic is Frankenstein, the 1931 work featuring Boris Karloff as the monster created by Frankenstein using body parts. Mary Shelley’s novel has endured through the ages and this rendition is one of the iconic monster films from the early 20th century.

There’s a host of other films to see, including everyone’s date night favourite, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), Blade Runner: The Final Cut (1982), plus the most recent Blade Runner 2049 (2017). The films are divided into four thematic strands – Monstrous Beauty, Otherworldly Encounters, Companion Species, and Earthly Survival.

Tickets are available online and from the GOMA Cinémathèque Box Office from one hour prior to screenings. View the entire Curious Affection Film Program HERE.

A special free program of films has Okja at 3pm on May 12, Bong Joon-ho’s celebrated Netflix film about a young woman caught up in the crossfire between animal activism, corporate greed and scientific ethics. Then on May 19 at 3pm there’s a Talk and Screening: Nenette, Nicolas Philibert’s documentary from 2010, about a 40 year-old orangutan who’s spent her life in captivity at the Managerie du Jardin des Plantes Zoo in Paris.
