Anzac: Photographs By Laurence Aberhart

Ipswich Art Gallery

ANZAC: Photographs by Laurence Aberhart is a fascinating exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I at Ipswich Art Gallery.

Ipswich memorials at Booval, Bundamba and Ebbw Vale will form part of the exhibit from acclaimed New Zealand photographer Laurence Aberhart, which is on display at the D’Arcy Doyle Place gallery from 17 March to 29 April.

Focusing on ‘lone digger’ memorials, Aberhart’s images investigate the grief and gratitude felt by communities following the Great War. With so many soldiers buried overseas, the memorials were like 'surrogate graves' for those who didn't return and were an important part of the grieving and healing process for communities, all of which had lost young men.

The exhibition is the culmination of his 30-year journey to photograph WWI memorials across Australia and New Zealand.
