Qso 70th Anniversary

South Bank

Join Queensland Symphony Orchestra this February to celebrate their 70th anniversary with outstanding concerts led by acclaimed conductor, Alondra de la Parra, and with virtuoso violinist Maxim Vengerov.

One of the most compelling conductors of her generation, de la Parra is leading QSO this year as their Music Director after she made an impact during 2016’s concert program with her amazing talents. Having her on board is a special privilege.

De la Parra will conduct QSO Morning Masterworks on Friday, 17 February, and QSO Maestro on Saturday, 18 February, with a program that also continues her epic Mahler cycle with Symphony No.1 Titan. The program will also feature talented young pianist, Zhang Zuo, making her QSO exclusive Australian debut playing Piano Concerto No.1 by Mendelssohn.

Vengerov, world violinist superstar and QSO’s Artist-in-Residence this year, returns to the concert hall stage after his compelling Tchaikovsky Gala concert in 2016. As part of QSO’s 2017 season launch on Thursday, 23 February, he’ll perform a Queensland-first Concert Hall recital. Pieces by Schubert, Beethoven, Ravel, Ernst and Paganini will feature alongside pianist, Roustern Saïtkoulov.

These concert events signal the beginning of a stellar year for QSO, with local and internationally renowned talent offering audiences stirring performances. It’s just the beginning of a year of powerful and passionate music. The orchestra has certainly come of age after making its 1947 debut at Brisbane City Hall, opening their program with Wagner’s Tannhauser Overture – a piece of music to be performed again to open the 70th anniversary celebrations and conducted by de la Parra.
