Winter Holiday Fun
State Library Of Qld
Make the most of the school holidays and keep the kids happy and stimulated with the State Library of Queensland's Winter Holiday Fun program of events, June 30 - July 15.
There are free and paid activities for all ages with a variety of creative programs for children, young people and families. How about taking the young ones up to eight years of age along to The Corner, where they'll exercise their potential creative genius with art making, facilitated play, sharing stories and creative conversations?
There are hidden stories, adventures and workshops at The Great and Grand Rumpus events, such as Mini Me Making where children can make a Mini Me of themselves and take it on an adventure. Or how about Video Rumpus, using Tagtool - a live video creation and mapping tool for iPad that allows users to paint and animate the spaces of the Great and Grand Rumpus and bring them to life. Audio Rumpus has participants recording and manipulating audio using Ableton Live software, so they can experiment with samples and triggers to create wild and wonderful noises that will fill the space. It'll be a thrill when the creations they make end up being part of an ongoing installation in the space.
A regular highlight of the SLQ program is with the Story Lab workshops. Duct Tape Island for ages 8 - 12 with Dr. Andrew King sees kids being part of an envoy of young engineers stranded on a deserted island. The only supply they have is duct tape in this fun and creative engineering challenge where participants work in groups to create objects.
Older ones aren't forgotten, with Capturing 360° Perspectives with Jessie Hughes suitable for 12 - 16 year-olds. Here, you can explore the creative potential of 360° cameras in a filmmaking workshop where you'll collaboratively produce short 360° films to be viewed in Virtual Reality! What's not to love?
To help celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and as part of NAIDOC Week 2018, make sure you get along to Our Sporting Greats: Sports Day on Wednesday, July 11. This is a fun-filled Sports Day where everyone is invited to play traditional games on the Maiwar Green. While you're there, take a tour of Our Sporting Greats, in SLQ's kuril dhagun to witness unsung Murri and Ailan athletic heroes from the sporting world in an inspiring showcase of images, memorabilia and digital stories.
All these and many more! View the full PROGRAM here.
