Things That Go Bump In The Night
Ipswich
A unique and slightly spooky night of music awaits those who attend Things That Go Bump in the Night at Studio 188 in Ipswich on Saturday, 24 October.
The Camerata of St John’s presents some eerily-themed orchestral works in the tradition of American Halloween concerts, alongside specially commissioned short films by Aussie director, Anthony Lucas, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the stunning animation, The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello.
The program is a typically adventurous one for the Camerata of St John’s – a professional chamber orchestra in residence at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre at Southbank – which has a reputation for innovation and an unorthodox repertoire. Here, they’ll play music that could scare your pants off, such as Bernard Herrman’s chilling score from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic frightener, Psycho.
There’s also Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre, where death calls the dead from their graves to dance for him as he plays his disturbingly tuned fiddle (with the E string tuned to E flat). And to top it off, the Japanese anime film Spirited Away’s hit song by Youmi Kimura, Always With Me, is about a sullen 10 year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighbourhood, inadvertently enters the spirit world. As you do.
It’s guaranteed to be a wonderful night of spine-tingling music. All ages can attend, bearing in mind that there will be mild horror themes, giving it a PG rating.
