History Alive: A Journey Through Time

Fort Lytton

History Alive: A Journey Through Time brings Fort Lytton, one of Australia’s rare remaining 19th century forts and one time 20th century quarantine station to life for a weekend in June with a jam-packed 2 day programme of historical themed activities and entertainment.

History Alive Fort Lytton

Kicking things off each morning with a bang, the fort’s original 64 pounder guns will be fired at the enemy across the Brisbane river; the rest of the day is a whirl of activity over three areas – the Main, Riverfront and Lytton Arenas and the Encampments.

The arenas set the scene for a host of re-enactments including Napoleonic Skirmish, Archery Through the Ages, Viking ball games and Byzantine Battle Driils as well as English folk dancing, Turban Tying competition and a session of interactive children’s games including sack races, horse shoe toss, spinning tops, marble and tug of war hosted by the Qld Colonial Association.

Meantime the Encampments are a hive of activity with demos of everything from 12th century shoe-making, weaving workshops and embroidery classes to Middle-eastern cooking, Viking age firee starting, dressing a Victorian lady and Viking games for children.

And ongoing throughout the day will be roving Morris Dancers, Medieval coin striking demos, colonial singing sessions, periodic cannon firings, Medieval cheese and linen making and a kid's tapestry weaving table.
