Oshin Japanese Restaurant
Brisbane
Updated: Mar 12, 2026
Whether or not it was the Japanese fascination with koalas that determined the location of Oshin Japanese restaurant in ‘Koala House’, an early 20th century building in Brisbane CBD with a careworn pair of carved koalas on its parapet, it is an unlikely location for a restaurant.
In the downtown commercial district of Brisbane, by night the streets nearby are deserted but climb the flight of steps inside Koala House and Oshin’s cosy traditional dining space will be bustling with Japanese diners, with a side of theatre from the flamboyant chefs as it has been since it opened in 1987. While the décor feels a bit tired, the sashimi and sushi is fresh and the shabu shabu and banquets are reasonably priced for Japanese of this calibre.
The menu may have changed since our visit.
