Since its establishment by eponymous chef Thierry Galichet in 2004, Montrachet has quietly held the title for best French restaurant in Brisbane.
Occupying an old shopfront, its interior of brass, wood panelling and leather is that of a chic little brasserie from anywhere in France and this is supplemented with pavement dining. And the menu, borrowing from Thierry’s Lyonnaise past offers diners a superb gallic feast.
Start with a traditional aperitif such as Ricard (like Pernod) or a Kir Royale (champagne and crème de cassis) before launching into delights such as Crepes Coquilles St Jacques, Escargots en Cocottes (garlic snails in little pots with a pastry lid) or one of his divine soufflés.
Mains are typical and feature a range of seafood such as Bouillabaisse, duck (Canard Roti) lamb (Cote d’Agneau) and steak (Filets de boeuf with frites and salade – a staple in French restaurants everywhere).
As for dessert the bavarois and crème brulee are about as good as it gets this side of the equator.
Be warned however that dinner sittings come in 2 sessions – at 6.30pm or 8pm in order to accommodate demand in the relatively cosy setting.
