In keeping with its country's geography Little Taipei is separate from the mainland of Asia (in this case Market Square), and requires an extra effort to get there.

Take Lewina St leading off the car park at Market Square and you'll find the back end of a two storey building which has the large High Fresh Taiwanese supermarket on the ground floor and a blink and you miss it doorway adjacent.

The adventure doesn't end here – take the inside stairs* to an unmarked door that opens onto a mini food court which offers a quick and dirt cheap culinary trip through South East Asia.

Sharing the space are David's Sizzling Steak (cook your own wagyu steak and veges on the presented sizzling platter for $14), the hole-in-the-wall Bento Box (Japanese curries), and the Chinese character signed Free Noodle with basic Taiwanese street food combos (all under $10) such as egg or rice noodle soup, mince pork with rice and snacks such as radish, taro cake or deep fried wonton.

Otherwise there's Master Chef Hwang's menu of Taiwanese San Bei Ji (chicken cooked in soy sauce with basil), diced veal in black bean sauce or salt and pepper spare ribs all for under $10 including sides of soy stewed pigs ears or sea vegetables for diners who want to get right in the zone while across the dining room Ya Hoo Malaysian peddles satay and regional dishes.

To finish the meal Easy Way Bubble Tea has a range of liquid adventures – try the lychee or almond milk or a fruit tea such as plum, passionfruit or blueberry.

*Need to know: there's also an elevator that leads from within the supermarket to below to open straight into the food hall.
