Since this quaint wooden hut style restaurant opened almost 20 years ago it has carved a niche for itself amongst Mitchelton locals and fondue fans.

On weekends, especially in winter the crowds pour in to sit amongst the cowbell and alp photo-adorned walls and partake in the homey traditional fare from the alpine regions of Western Europe. Zurich schnitzels, Kassler (smoked pork tenderloin) come in hearty helpings along with their signature rosti (potato).

But it is the fondue that is the leading act here – cheese can be ordered on the spot and meat and the chocolate need prior notice, with Gluhwein made in house as the ideal sidekick.

Des Alpes also prides itself on its family friendliness and deservedly so – children have their own menu – a lighter one featuring pasta or Rosti with cheese for $11.50 or a more substantial eye fillet or fish with rosti for $14.50. The menu itself has activities on the back and included are drinks and home made dessert.

Lastly, on Market Day, the 1st Sunday of each month, drop in for a Swiss style breakfast from 7.30am onwards.
