This funky little café roastery and tea house is one of Cleveland's buried treasures, serving up excellent coffee, tea, breakfasts and snacks from its quarters in an industrial zone set back from the sea villages.
Inside the café tables are inlaid with coffee sacks and beans, local artist's work and photos adorn the walls and in one corner there's a magazine and table games stand and another the coffee roaster, which fires up a couple of times a week.
In pride of place by the front door is a vintage roaster which once belonged to Robert Harris, the NZ coffee mogul, who also happened to be the person who trained Dan, the owner of D L Coffee, in the art of coffee making.

As well as the coffee, of which there's the popular house blend or the week's specialty to choose from, this is the place for fantastic chai and loose leaf traditional and herbal teas as well. Partner Megan is on a quest to match the best coffee with the best teas, with little touches such as herbal teas served in glass teapots to watch the flowers open as they infuse.

And food is taken just as seriously as the beverages here with delicious hot breakfasts such as the Green brekkie – turkish, pesto, avo and poached eggs, sweet corn and zucchini fritters with grilled haloumi or pancakes with butterscotch sauce and Canadian style bacon.
Otherwise the sandwiches are made fresh (think coriander lime chicken with avo
and cheese) as are some of the baked goodies such as scones and muffins.
As a little piece of extra history to go with Dan's story is the face featured on his logo is that of his grandfather who was a coffee roaster in his native Portugal.
