Tucked away in a colonial weatherboard shop next to the station, Whistle Stop would have to be one of Brisbane's most charming cafes, the kind of place to bring a visitor to for a quintessentially Queensland experience that encapsulates the best of old and new.
Take a seat under the awning and watch the trains come and go, in one of the bright breezy VJ walled rooms inside or out in the back yard which features a lush fragrant herb garden and clusters of tables and chairs under umbrellas scattered on the grass. Whichever way, leave longer than a whistle stop to hang out and enjoy the delicious home-made and locally sourced fare that comes out of the kitchen. In fact don't be in a hurry as everything's made from scratch upon ordering.

Old-fashioned lemonade and ginger ale is hand made and reminiscent of summer at Grandma's, signature sausage rolls, tarts, jams, quiches, frittatas and cakes baked in-house, chips are hand cut and salads infused with back yard herbs.

On the breakfast menu are organic free range eggs done benedict, with locally cured bacon in a roll or with some of the fresh garden herbs in an omelette. For something sweet there're crepes folded with lemon curd accompanied by the house made strawberry jam and thick cream or one of the delicious daily baked muffins.

For lunch there's a mezze plate of olives, cured meat and dips, wraps, steak sandwich, sausage rolls and pasta or salads of the day as well as other interloping items that pop up according to what's fresh, in season and locally available. And for afters there's a counter of changeable sweet treats on offer. Those accustomed to large portions may find servings on the smaller side but the trade-off is that nothing is pre-prepared or mass-produced and it shows in the quality.
