Alongside the historic Hawthorne Cinemas is a rustic gateway leading to a narrow passageway, at the rear of which is this café. Tucked underneath the cinema, and entered via a glass sliding door, inside its very much the 70’s enclosed patio, with brick floor, lairy upholstered garden chairs and posters on the wall.

But there’s nothing daggy about it, it’s a funky little venue run by groovers who know how to make a coffee and whip up an excellent breakfast, some muffins or Spanish tapas that would put many city venues to shame. The perfect spot to quell the pre-and post-cinema munchies.

For word weary parents there is plenty of space for prams, the street is a way away and children have a dedicated play corner.
