A perennial Paddington favourite is this bohemian shop where pierced students rub elbows with yammering real estate agents in its cosy rooms of randomly painted wooden tables and chairs and retro movie posters.
Originally started years ago by Thierry Roussel, Brisbane’s esteemed Michelin star French chef who currently runs Francophile haunt Montrachet down the road, his legacy appears to have lived on here. With a menu that is predominantly vegetarian and healthy in both content and portion Sassafras keeps it simple. While lunch fare such as salmon cakes, cous cous salad and home made pies are good the stars are the house-baked cakes such as lemon yoghurt and the breakfasts (available till 2pm) such as chilli corn cakes with hommus and bacon.
For those who enjoy a bit more headspace out back is a leafy cobbled courtyard where on weekends there are bonus BBQ’s and live jazz.
