Since its establishment in 1977 this sliver of Italy in Merthyr Village has kept locals supplied with their fix of prosciutto parma, gorgonzola, Sicilian olives, pane and biscotti.

Today it is still a fine place to stock up on continental products and if it’s lunchtime, grab a bite at the café if you don’t mind counter service and the odd queue. Amongst the better offerings are the risotto balls stuffed with bocconcini, chilli and spinach leaves and the salads, which are almost a meal on their own.
