The traffic in Bulimba's industrial back streets has picked up since locals started discovering this buried treasure in their depths – a gorgeous little café patisserie by the creative boffins from French Twist.
With their signature flair this oasis of greenery in an aviary-like cage has been decked out with rustic tables and chairs, shelves of bread, a patisserie counter, a vintage weighing machine stacked with magazines and a gleaming espresso machine.
Coffee is Silk from Melbourne, daily loaves come freshly baked, pastries are strictly French tartes and gateaux and there's also a smattering of delish savoury stuff – a tartine plate mix of petite open-faced sandwiches, filled baguettes and panades – rustic bakes of pumpkin, hale and gruyere cheese and the like.
This is also a charming spot for breakfast with a twist (served till 1 on weekends) – on the menu are Brioche French toast with spiced poached pears, herbed haloumi tartine or free range eggs with a choice of roast pumpkin or prosciutto.
